Neil Aspinall, a close friend of the Beatles and the man who ran the Apple music empire, has died, his family has revealed.

The 66-year-old worked as a roadie and accountant for the band before becoming chief executive of Apple Corps.

He was known by some in the industry as the real "Fifth Beatle".

In a statement released on behalf of Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, the company described him as a "great man" who would be missed.

In the statement, also on behalf of Beatle widows Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison, Apple Corps said: "As a loyal friend, confidant and chief executive, Neil's trusting stewardship and guidance has left a far-reaching legacy for generations to come.

"All his friends and loved ones will greatly miss him but will always retain the fondest memories of a great man."

Mr Aspinall went to school with McCartney and George Harrison at the Liverpool Institute for Boys.

When they started the band, he was their road manager and minder.

As their popularity grew, he stayed with them as an assistant and fixer until 1968, when he became manager of Apple Corps.

Taking on the role on the condition he would do it "only until they found someone else", he only quit the position last year.

He died in hospital in New York after a brief illness and is survived by his wife Suzy and five children.

You're pretty much the worst friend I've ever had. Except for maybe Rachael. but I have a feeling that she and I would get on fine, given a second chance. You just suck. Oh, and as an eighteen-year-old with an extremely limited social circle, damn is that saying something.

Why does everything you say have to be the right thing, period, no two ways about it? Seriously, I've never met anyone over the age of twelve who is so strangely self-centered as you are.

I've often wondered about people like you. The sort of people who are fine students, at least moderately-talented athletes/musicians/artists/whatever who are always saying things like, "I suck! I don't deserve these accolades!" Do you honestly believe you don't deserve the attention, or are you just looking for more attention? For people to coo over you and your achievements and tell you that, no, you don't suck, you're wonderful? At least in the case of yourself, dear friend, I believe it is the latter. Sorry.

I'm also tired of you complaining about your home life. Can it, okay? Do you think you're the only teenager ever who has felt alienated and put-out by your family? Oh, do shut up. How do you know? This feeling seems to come and go. I felt this way at the beginning of the semester, and then it died. I feel it again, and I don't know what to do or say.

I wish I had all the answers. But doesn't everyone? I bet if you knew what this was really about, you'd think I was a dork. You'd tell me to grow up. Well, I suppose that's never going to happen.

I might be getting a new job this coming month. It's at a tiny dog/pet store at the mall. Just Dogs, it's called. I quit Kroger 'cause I was miserable. Once, after clocking out, my dad made me go over to the pharmacy and take my blood pressure. I don't care how inaccurate those things are, it should not have been that high. I hate people even more when you can call them "customers". I hope I'm not ever a sucky customer.

5. I really didn't find The Exorcist to be all that frightening the first time I watched it (also, I got it for $5 in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart).

6. I really really really really really hate Keanu Reeves' acting (or lack thereof).

My rats chewed my line captain's drill. :(

Last night's game was... interesting. For the first two games, my school scored nothing. Complete shut-outs. On Friday, when playing one of the better teams in the northern part of the state, we scored two touch downs and our score was 14. Actually, until half-time, we were winning. They came back up and the game finished 14-31, but still. It was pretty amazing.

And the low brass line is absolutely the most asshole-ish line in the band. Hands down. But we love it.

I got his attention last night. Well, Brandon did. That was funny. Really. He's such an ass. Him, not Brandon.

And I cannot be the only one who wonders about Fleming and Robson's relationship, can I? Monica's such a beard.
